# Quitting vaping, cigarettes or pouches: what changes

## TL;DR

- The drug is the same, the withdrawal is the same, and a craving lasts the same few minutes whichever product is missing.
- What differs is frequency and place. A cigarette has friction: going outside, the smell, the time. A vape and a pouch have almost none, so they fit into more moments, and each moment becomes a craving.
- Quitting vaping or pouches is therefore not easier than quitting smoking because the products are "cleaner". It is often harder, and it comes with more practice.
- The thing to do in the moment is the same for all three: short hard effort, slow exhaling, wait.
- Not One More was built for all three from the start. You pick your product during setup, and the maths, the units and the discreet option follow.

## What is the same

Nicotine. It reaches the brain within about ten seconds of inhaling and a little more slowly through the gum; either way it is the same molecule doing the same thing, and it leaves the body on the same schedule. The withdrawal after stopping, the irritability, restlessness, poor concentration, low mood and hunger, is the same for all three products, peaks around days two and three, and eases over two to four weeks.

A craving is the same shape too: it rises, peaks and passes in roughly three to five minutes if nothing feeds it. And the two things known to act on it without medication, short hard physical effort and slow exhaling, work the same whichever product you are missing. So does nicotine replacement, which is well evidenced for smoking and has no reason not to apply to vaping or pouches.

## What is different: friction

A cigarette costs you something every time. You have to go outside, or at least to a window. It takes five minutes. It smells, and people notice. You cannot do it in a meeting, on a plane, in bed, at your desk, in your car with children in it.

A vape costs almost nothing. It is in your pocket, it is a second's draw, and in many places nobody sees. A pouch costs even less: it is parked and forgotten, invisible, usable literally anywhere. So the number of times a day the product is used goes up. The part that matters for quitting is that the number of ordinary moments paired with nicotine goes up with it.

Each of those pairings is a craving you will have to get through. A pack-a-day smoker has perhaps twenty moments. A heavy vaper can have far more. That is why quitting vaping is often described as harder than quitting cigarettes by people who have done both, and it is not the nicotine.

## What is different: the ritual

A cigarette's ritual is the breath: a slow draw, a pause, a long exhale, repeated for a few minutes. Much of what feels calming about it is that breathing pattern rather than the drug, which is why the first beat of a Hit is three long exhales. You keep the breath and drop the cigarette.

A vape keeps the breath ritual and loses the pause: no lighting, no going outside, no natural end. A pouch loses the breath entirely and replaces it with something oral and continuous. Each of these changes what the craving feels like and what you reach for. For vaping, the breathing beat does a lot of the work. For pouches, the physical effort matters more because there is no breath ritual to replace.

## What is different: where you are

Because a cigarette needs privacy and a vape or pouch does not, the cravings for a vape or pouch arrive in places where you cannot do much: a desk, a meeting, a train. An answer to a craving that only works in private is an answer that gets abandoned.

This is why Not One More offers two actions rather than one, and why the choice is made on the screen, in the moment: ten squats where you can, or thirty seconds of an isometric squeeze, everything tensed hard, sitting or standing, invisible, where you cannot. Whether squats are possible depends on where you happen to be standing when the craving hits, which is not something a setting chosen weeks ago can know.

## What does not change: the method

Get through the next few minutes without the product. Do a specific, effortful thing while you wait. Count the times. Do not count days, because one slip zeroes a day count and never touches the other number.

Not One More does the same thing for all three products. You pick yours during setup; the app does the money and the units in your terms, whether cigarettes, puffs or pouches, and everything else is the same two minutes. Heavy vapers and pouch users get more cravings, which means the trigger map and the comparison of which action works for you become useful faster.

## Questions

### Is quitting vaping harder than quitting smoking?

Often, yes, and not because of the nicotine. A vape fits into more moments of a day than a cigarette can, so there are more cravings to get through. Each is the same few minutes; there are just more of them. The upside is the same: more practice, and the frequency falls over the first weeks.

### Is switching from cigarettes to vaping the same as quitting?

No, and this page is not about that. Some health services, including the NHS, support switching from cigarettes to vaping as a route off tobacco, and that is a legitimate choice. Not One More is for people who want off nicotine in whatever form. If you are vaping as a step down from cigarettes and want to stop the vape too, that is where it starts.

### Do nicotine pouches count as quitting smoking?

They are a way of not smoking, and they carry none of the smoke. They are still nicotine, with the same withdrawal when you stop and often more cravings, because a pouch fits into more moments than a cigarette. If your goal is off nicotine, a pouch is a product to quit, and the guide on quitting pouches covers it.

### Can I use one app for all three?

Yes. Not One More was built nicotine-broad from the start rather than adapted from a cigarette app, and you pick your product during setup. If you use more than one, pick the one you most want to stop; the craving is the same whichever it is.
