What to do instead of vaping when a craving hits

The short version

Why "distract yourself" is not enough

Everyone tells you to distract yourself. The problem is that a distraction is a thing you might do, and a craving is a thing that is definitely happening. Faced with a vague plan and a specific urge, the urge wins.

What works is a specific, physical, slightly effortful thing that you have decided on in advance and do every time, so that when the craving arrives there is no decision left to make, only an action to start. The action does not need to be clever. It needs to be immediate, possible where you are, and take about as long as the craving.

The two things that are known to work

Short, hard physical effort. A few minutes of exercise reduces cigarette cravings and lengthens the time until the next one. This is the best-evidenced lever available without medication, and the effect appears with under a minute of real effort. It does not need a gym, kit or a change of clothes. Ten squats is enough. So is a flight of stairs taken fast, or twenty seconds of anything that makes your legs burn.

Slow exhaling. Breathing with a long, slow exhale lowers physiological arousal in real time. This matters more for vaping than for anything else, because a vape is a breathing ritual: a slow draw, a pause, a long exhale, repeated. Much of what feels calming about it is the breath. You can keep the breath and drop the vape. Three long exhales, in through the nose, a second small sip of air, then out slowly through the mouth, are enough to feel the difference.

The version for when you cannot exercise

Most vape cravings happen somewhere you cannot do squats: at a desk, in a meeting, on a train, at a dinner table. An answer that only works in private is an answer that gets abandoned.

The discreet version is an isometric squeeze. Sitting or standing, tense everything from your legs to your fists, hard, and hold it for thirty seconds. It is invisible. It burns by the end. It does the same job as the squats because it is the effort that matters, not the movement.

It is deliberately still work. An escape hatch that removed the effort would stop being a choice about your surroundings and become the button everyone presses on a bad day.

Then wait

This is the part people skip. After the effort and the breathing, the craving is falling. Give it another minute. Notice that it is passing without a vape. Nothing bad is happening.

That minute is where the learning is. Vaping ends a craving early and teaches you that vaping is what ends cravings. Waiting through one teaches the opposite, and the next craving at that moment is a little weaker for it.

Do the same thing every time

The sequence takes about two minutes: breathe, burn, wait. It is what a Hit in Not One More is, with the reps counted by your phone’s motion sensor so a completed craving is a completed craving, and the craving curve on screen so you can see it fall. But the app is a way of doing the thing, not the thing. What matters is doing it every time the craving comes, and keeping count.

Count the cravings you get through, not the days you have gone without. One slip zeroes a day count and never touches the other number.

Questions

What if I am in public and cannot exercise?

Take the isometric hold. Tense everything, hard, for thirty seconds, sitting or standing. Nobody will notice, and it does the same work as the squats because the effort is the point. Not One More offers it on the Burn screen every time, chosen in the moment rather than set in advance, because where you are when the craving hits is not something a setting can know.

Does chewing gum or drinking water help?

They occupy the mouth and the hands, which helps some people with the ritual side of vaping. They do not act on the craving the way effort and breathing do, so use them alongside, not instead. Nicotine gum is a different thing. That is nicotine replacement, and it is well evidenced.

Should I just take one puff to make it stop?

It will make it stop, and it will teach you that a puff is what makes it stop. The next craving arrives on schedule and no smaller. If you do slip, log it and move on; a slip is information, not a verdict. But the whole method is getting through the few minutes without the puff, and each time you do, that moment gets easier.

How many cravings a day is normal when quitting vaping?

More than a smoker gets, usually. A vape is available in more moments than a cigarette, so heavy vapers tend to have more cravings per day, each lasting the same few minutes. It also means more practice, and the frequency drops over the first weeks.
